In Memoriam of December 6, 1989

Twenty years ago, on December 6, 1989, fourteen women - students and faculty - at l'École Polytechnique in Montréal, Québec, were killed by a male student. This student had entered the school armed with a rifle, separated men from women, and began shooting the women.

These women were targeted because of their presence in the traditionally male-dominated field of engineering, and for representing the advancement of women. Their murder was an attack on the successes of the women's movement and on the ideals of equality that had animated it. December 6 has since been designated as the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women; it is a day for recognising and opposing the ongoing realities of violence against women.

This poster was created by the Canadian Federation of Students to memorialise the twentieth anniversary of the Montréal Massacre and to inspire new generations to remember, to defy and to organise for change.
